Children and dogs have the cutest connections, and our hearts were not ready for it.

Growing up with a dog often becomes one of those quiet, lifelong anchors children carry with them. Dogs offer companionship that's steady, forgiving, and wonderfully uncomplicated - something especially meaningful during childhood, when emotions are big and words are still catching up. Research has shown that kids who grow up with dogs often benefit from increased physical activity, lower stress levels, and improved emotional wellbeing. Dogs encourage movement, outdoor play, and routine, turning everyday life into a shared adventure. They're also excellent listeners. Children frequently talk to dogs more freely than to adults, practicing empathy, communication, and emotional expression in a space that feels safe and judgment-free. Dogs are certified good boys for this reason alone, if not more.

For dogs, kids are equally special. Children often bring playfulness, affection, and a sense of purpose into a dog's life.   • Just looking at these two gentle souls, understanding their dynamics through the pictures, we know they both won in life. When a kid and a dog share this kind of connection, they take it to life. But they're both young, they have time to just be. To share long walks together, to cherish playtime, and even just hug and hang out by a window with a view. Dogs are not just man's best friends - they are children's dearest friendship they will remember until forever. And these two? They're on the way there. But until that time comes, they have many more years to enjoy each other, and to grow up together.

    OP foobaby1992 That was actually their Halloween costume this past year but unfortunately neither of them tolerated wearing it for long (Hank is a little on the chubby side and currently on a diet so the granny costume was a tight fit).

    The year before that was probably the best costume they'll ever have. We turned a wagon into the Orca from Jaws and plopped my daughter in it dressed as Quint (drawn on mustache and mutton chops included) and put a shark fin on Hank it was perfection

    Edit: I read a comment on reddit somewhere that said dogs will give you the happiest and the saddest day of your life. I couldn't agree with a statement more. Ive had dogs my entire life but its hard to explain that one. My dog is my soul mate and I will never replace him.

    OP foobaby1992 You have excellent taste in pet names. Hank is my 3rd dog so I'm familiar with what's inevitably going to happen in the future but god it never gets easier. To me they enrich your life so much that it's more than worth the pain of saying goodbye though and in a Iway they give you so much love and so many memories that they never really leave you. Each dog is so very special even when they're a similar breed so I don't think it's possible to ever replace them.

    When it comes to losing a pup and bringing a new one home I find a lot of comfort in this quote: "It came to me that every time I lose a dog, they take a piece of my heart with them and every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog and I will become as generous and loving as they are".. I hope your kiddo and you get plenty more years with your good boy Hank.

    OP foobaby1992 That hasn't been the case with any of the dogs in my life and that's usually associated with strangers making prolonged eye contact. Hank has also known my daughter since the day we brought her home from the hospital and he's only a few months older than her.

    Realistic_Mushroom72 Those are the worse, she will be in her early teens, unless he is already old, still I can't have dogs, I went thru that shit once, it was more than enough, bad enough I have to go thru that loss with my family, I can't be doing that shit every couple of years with my pets, no way.

    OP foobaby1992 I got him when I was 7 months pregnant with her so they'll hopefully have plenty of time together. I can agree that saying goodbye to them is the absolute worst but grief is just a reflection of love and I wouldn't trade that love for anything including the pain that's tied to it.
